The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday, signalling a new beginning for the sport in the country - the local Tennis scene having in recent years being reduced to bringing in top players for mere exhibition matches.
Only four other Asian countries host ATP World Tour events and Malaysia has been given a multiple year contract for the hosting of the event.
"I am very pleased that Malaysia will be hosting this ATP World Tour 250 tournament for the foreseeable future, an event, like our Formula One Grand Prix, that promotes Malaysia internationally whilst also being an annual social and sporting happening for Malaysians," said Najib.
"At the same time, promoting sport and a healthy active lifestyle which is so important to us all.
"I hope this tournament will inspire Malaysians and that we will one day produce a player who can win the singles title at this ATP World Tour event."
The Malaysian Open will be organised by IMG. It will carry a total prize money of $947US,750 (RM3.4 million), whilst the main draws will be 28 in singles and 16 pairs in doubles.
Alongside World No 8 Verdasco in the draw will be World No 10 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, No 11 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, Gael Monfils of France and David Ferrer of Spain.
The organisers have also announced an attractive programme for the fans dubbed "Best Job in the World" where winners will be able to enjoy working alongside the Tennis stars as part of the organisation for a duration of five weeks.
The fans' competition will be an annual affair.
