Unflagging support as stars and fans cheer Murray struggle
by Mark Casci , Yorkshire Post
FORMER Wimbledon champions, celebrities and a cast of thousands watched as Andy Murray crashed out of the semi-finals.
In the royal box there were seats for five-time champion Bjorn Borg, four-time champion Rod Laver and former Wimbledon favourite Ilie Nastase. Also there were Yorkshire TV journalist Sir Michael Parkinson with Sir David Frost among the guests.
The Duke of York, Princess Alexandra, Princess Michael of Kent and the Duchess of Gloucester were representing the royal family.
Inside Centre Court the crowd was buzzing with excitement as Murray and Roddick walked out, with support seemingly equal for the two men, in spite of Murray playing on home turf.
He was cheered on by fellow Scot and Doctor Who actor David Tennant, as well as his mother Judy and girlfriend Kim Sears who watched the action from their usual seats in the players' box. Murray's father Willie was also there to lend support while Roddick was cheered on by his model wife Brooklyn Decker.
Those not in Centre Court had to make do with watching on Court number two where 4,000 fans filed in to watch the match on screens.
Thousands set up camp on Henman Hill - renamed by some Murry Mount - in front of a big screen at the All England Club.
Helen Garnett, 46, from Putney in south west London, arrived with her mother Wilma, 72, and friends from Switzerland.
Seated in a prime position on the steps and wearing a Union flag cap, she said: "Henman created this. I don't think the name should change, it would be disrespectful."
