Appetite to win prevents roof caving in on Murray 's SW19 dream

ANDY MURRAY plans to munch his way through as much food as possible in order to maintain his appetite for Wimbledon glory. The 22-year-old Scot booked his place in the quarter finals with a gruelling five-set victory over Stanislas Wawrinka under the brand new roof at Centre Court late last night. And he hopes that piling on the calories today will make sure he still has enough in the tank when he takes on the unseeded former world No.1 Juan-Carlos Ferrero in the last eight tomorrow. Murray came through a similar epic at this stage against Richard Gasquet this time last year, only to crash out in three sets against Rafael Nadal in the next round, and is keen to prevent history repeating itself. "I'm going to sleep late, practice around 2pm, go and have an ice bath and massage, see the physio for an hour-and-a-half and make sure I eat three or four very big meals to get as much food in me as possible, " Murray said. "Hopefully that will be enough." Murray's 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory over No.19 seed Wawrinka took just under four hours to complete in pressure cooker conditions on Centre Court, but the Scot believes that the exertion will not necessarily prove to be a hindrance. "Everything depends on how you recover, " he said. "If you recover fine, then it's a good thing to have played the long match and know that you've got four hours of Tennis in you. "On grass you very rarely play matches that are that long. If I recover fine, then it is a positive." The Scot was unhappy about being told only at the last minute that his last-16 match was to proceed under the new roof, despite bright sunlight outside. He struggled to adjust to the heavier bounce, and the humid atmosphere in the enclosed court, but now feels such factors will work to his advantage should poor weather mean any of his remaining games are played under the roof. "The conditions with the roof are very different, " the world No.3 said. "It was very, very heavy and very humid. "I like playing indoors, but when you haven't practised or ever played a match under a roof on grass you don't know what to expect. "I still thought for two-anda-half sets of the match I played great Tennis. It just took me a while to get used to it. Now going into the next match, I'll know what to expect if the roof comes on. "I think the decision, in my opinion, should be made before the last match is finished so they can let the players know in a decent amount of time what conditions they'll be playing under, " he added. "In very few sports would coaches and teams be particularly happy if they don't know exactly what time they're going to start, or what the conditions are going to be like when they go out there." MURRAY beat Ferrero en route to the title at Queen's Club earlier this month but knows a lot will depend on the day. "I played very well at Queen's, " he said. "The courts here are a little bit different. Ferrero is a very tough player. "He plays well on every surface and is a former world No.1. Every match, regardless of who you're playing against, especially in an individual sport, anything can happen on the day. "If I play poorly there is a good chance I will lose against him. But I'll try my best to play well. If I do that I've got a good chance of winning." Meanwhile, Murray's victim Wawrinka thinks a showdown between the Scot and his countryman Roger Federer would be the tournament's dream final. Swiss No.2 Wawrinka has played many Davis Cup matches with Federer and won the Olympic doubles gold in Beijing with him last year. He is also a practice partner of Murray's and feels the No.2 and No.3 seeds could well be destined to meet in the finale on Sunday. "For sure's Andy's playing very well, especially on grass, " Wawrinka said. "He has improved a lot in the last 12 months. I was close to him but he won the match. I think he's ready to win the tournament, but you don't forget the other players. Roger is still there and I think that would be a very nice final." It may take a while for the disappointment to subside, but Wawrinka will reflect on a match in which he often produced his best Tennis in the face of fervent home support. He also knows yesterday's match under the lights will go down in the history books. The match didn't finish until around 10.40pm, and is officially the latest finish ever at Wimbledon. "For sure it was very special, " Wawrinka said. "It was a very nice atmosphere with the centre court and all the crowd were for Andy Murray. But I enjoyed the match a lot."
