Cyprus' Baghdatis quits Davis Cup

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP)
Marcos Baghdatis announced on Wednesday he has quit Cyprus's Davis Cup team in order to concentrate on regaining his place in the top 10 of the world rankings.
The 25-year-old told a news conference he wants to focus on tournaments that will keep him among the best in the world instead of competing in the Davis Cup where Cyprus stands only a slim chance of advancing beyond Group 2.
Baghdatis has carried the Cyprus team in Davis Cup competition for years, earning 54 wins in 67 appearances. In singles matches, his record stands at 38 wins and only 3 losses.
He reached a career-high ranking of No. 8 in 2006, when he reached the Australian Open final and the semifinals at Wimbledon, but injuries saw him lose his place in the top 100 last year.
This season, he has beaten both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and climbed back up to No. 18 in the rankings.
''It was a positive year. I didn't do well at the Grand Slams, but I beat Federer and Nadal. I found a way to do well. I can make it into the 10 best,'' Baghdatis said.
He plans to compete in four more tournaments this season — three in Asia and one in Russia.
