ROGER FEDERER may know a lot more about winning Grand Slams than Andy Murray but the Scot is fast proving he knows how to deal with events after the majors.
Just six weeks on from the Australian Open final, where the Swiss legend beat the British No.1 in straight sets, both men are trying toget back to the normal routines of life on the ATP Tour.
But on the same day Murray beat American Michael Russell to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells, Federer was downed 5-7 7-5 7-6 by Marcos Baghdatis.
The Cypriot, 33rd in the world, was impressive but Federer was notin the mood for a scrap. He had three match points but still could not close out the match.
Panic
For Murray, the defeat was no great surprise. After winning 16 Grand Slams, playing a third-round match in the Californian desert was no big pull for the Swiss.
Murray said: "If you look at Roger, over the last few years even, he hasn't done that as well as he was able to. It takes its toll overtime. You win so much."
For Federer, the defeat came as little more than an annoying blip in an otherwise good start to the year.
Having not played at all since Melbourne he is a little ring rustyand said: "I felt in my first match I was doing many right things.
"But then the next thing you know I'm stuck in a third set and younever know what will happen.
"It was a decent match but maybe wrong choices at the wrong time for me.
"Maybe going for too much, maybe playing too passively. That's notsomething you can really work on. That comes through playing matchesand that's what I need."
Second seed Novak Djokovic failed to capitalise on Federer's defeat when he went down 7-5 6-3 to Croat Ivan Ljubicic last night.
Lloyd calls it quits
JOHN LLOYD last night stepped down as Great Britain's Davis Cup captain as the LTA make enquiries into the dire showing against Lithuania.
The 55-year-old, left, quit the role after he was criticised for his part in Team GB's defeat to the minnows.
LTA chief Roger Draper had already asked playerdirector Steven Martens to review the display but Lloyd opted to leave before he was sacked.
Lloyd said: "I have been a Davis Cup player, captain and it's now time to become a fan."
