Mailman's graffiti campaign draws fine

A mailman in England was fined and made to do community service after launching a graffiti campaign in which he labeled Scottish tennis star Andy Murray a "useless Jock," The Scotsman reported Wednesday.

Darren Swain was convicted of daubing dozens of posters at a Royal Mail sorting office in Coventry with abusive comments, two of which featured "racist slurs." The word "Jock" is a slang term for a Scot.

The 45-year-old, who dubbed himself "the scarlet pimpernel of the Post Office," was caught after officials installed covert cameras and called in handwriting experts.

He was later found guilty of three counts of criminal damage and two of racially aggravated criminal damage.

He was sentenced Monday to 200 hours unpaid work at Coventry Magistrates Court and ordered to pay $4,888.

Norman Wainwright, chairman of the bench, said, "We have had particular regard for the racially aggravated elements of this case. We have decided that it is serious enough for us to impose a community sentence."

"This is a very sad case. He has an impeccable record and is of impeccable character," defense lawyer Andris Skudra said, according to the Coventry Telegraph.

It was not clear why Swain chose to aim some of his abuse towards Murray, the British No. 1 and world No. 4.
