Since -- can't sports weekly with what's jumps. -- in the campus of the University of Cincinnati. Future host Jon Gruden. Welcome to our Thanksgiving edition of bearcats sports weekly Tom -- had to be joined by our. Head coach butch Jones and Cincinnati. -- gonna bounce back from a tough loss at rockers and coach come out against the scarlet -- you win the toss you before knowing that they're for your defense would. Be on the field first Stephens been pretty darn good lately and they were right there but also a chance maybe get kind of let Monty settle in a little bit -- for star. Well exactly right now obviously we knew what we're up against you know with once you've basically been true freshman. I'm making his first collegiate start quarterback. Against the number one defense in the Big East Conference so we wanted to. Put our defense on the field and I thought they responded exceptionally well. Force a three and out but you know comes on we can't turn the football over and unfortunately we turn the football over. And then we have to do a great job defensively they handle the sudden change before you know what they're up 70 and now the crowd's into it. But -- you are our defense kept playing and I thought take away two drives our defense played pretty well. But it's about taking care of the football -- and everything is about first down efficiency and we didn't do well. In that department offensively and defensively. It's getting off the field we did a great job on third down except for too long drives and no one of them was aided by an unfortunate. Personal foul penalty enough and malicious about it at all just an individual trying to make a -- his hands. Get up caught up behind a face mask -- up in the face and they call four and it was on third down were actually. We its -- and he would have been punting the football than that keeps the drive alive and he scores there were some unfortunate things. But again time we talk about it week is we have to be able to manage goes in and persevered you want to overcome those and we weren't able to do that Piscataway. We're going to further depth at some of those points that you cannot tell what the defense come away answering the bell sports net on now offenses -- to go up there. And do some of that second play the big east best defense got in there. Forced to strip now with your defense and really tough situation. Where everything is is it timing mechanism and that's what once you need to continue to learn and he'll go from that. If everything is about a a mental clock your internal clock when you sit back there throw the ball away. You -- to play another down put it on the shelf and move on and he tried to extend the play and obviously they created. Well after that that -- to score they go up seven. To zero and exchange a couple points -- just hit the ball in good field position go to the drive stalls which sent Tony Lilly on out there after a tough week last week did you -- Well it's great to see that and again as you know that the wind. -- elements were going in you know there's a big fourth down play there to keep the drive alive and thought George wings really ran behind his pads and did a great job. You see Tony come I don't think -- kicker I was really really -- Coach you don't really use fullback -- -- probably the most physical. Of your running backs in not a mention an -- -- this game -- a couple of runs but the course this season he's been very quietly can. Very consistent. And -- to -- their running back position but on special teams and you know you mentioned about the use of a fullback as we continue to grow our football program. With the recruiting process as we want to involve a fullback you know fullback is very big. To what we wanted to do from the goal line personnel. To short yardage to play action pass so I think you know as we continue to grow with recruiting. And the recruitment this class you'll start to see the evolution of a fullback and our offense as well. Coach you made mention of a tough drive for your defense -- -- what -- replays it was almost ten minutes and when you look at that a Patriots Atlanta that's -- that's devastating drive home to a field goal a little bit of -- victory and in the toy replica. I don't think I've ever been part of -- Drive that was point three plays and then up in a field goal again. That's the one drive one of two drives and we talked about earlier than we wish we could have back from the third down perspective. Is you know they made a couple of key third down and that's the thing is we got such a great job winning first down defensively. Now when we get this team's third especially third and long situations we need to get off the field but at the end of the day. We have played winning football didn't make the plays that we need to we had an interception that we -- it really should have been seven point the other way. You know knows that things when you're going to throw him ability and opportunity create big plays. We must make those. Coach -- the locker room you're only down ten at three you know you're getting the ball to fill that point like you maybe just a couple of dropped passes. But a couple big -- away from really this game being either inherently absolutely. You know that's that we talked to our players about. Is you know is as poorly as we've played and didn't make any place is still had three at halftime and that's a tribute. To our football team but again at the end of the day like I said -- we didn't make the necessary place you can't drop passes in our -- we've said it with our tempo. I dropped passes the equivalent of a turnover. And we can't we got to make sure we secured the football on again you know you have -- who's basically a true freshman making his first start everyone else around him. Has to elevate his elevate their play and I think we'll see that going in Syracuse our players understand that. You know the exciting thing is is were compete for Big East Conference championship. We still control winning championship. And that's why this week is obviously critical we wanna be able going to Syracuse which is going to be a great challenge. Come away with a victory and and you finally get back in an effort stadium we have been basically. I wanna see the fourth summer and September I can't remember win and were playing for a Big East Conference championship amongst our and company took so we got to take care of it. And of course we'll talk about the orange more hair a little bit a little White Sox is a little bit hit three catches for seven yards. As you went back and watch the film graded out pretty. He did. And I'm really excited about the true freshman from -- creek Georgia and you know we keep saying his role continues to expand it. And I'm excited about the future with him I think he's -- aligned himself -- -- best receivers in other places. In a ball in the great player he's a great person care a great thing when. And that's what we look forward recruiting process not just the player but a complete player both on the field you know. Somebody who's a complete player of all -- tickets. I mean this guy is turning an uneasy defensive captain. Another outstanding day thirteen tackles Burnett tackles for a loss a sack and I have. I really could get much more front of their at least. But when you talk about George when he talked about consistency. And JK Schaffer is the model of consistency. And I'm not just our defense. But now he has an expanded role on special teams and starts on our punt team. He's our punt return team and and that's what makes him different is all you have to do is tell him one time teacher and one thing and he takes the field and in -- The practice. The field he's playing with great effort in his heart and soul of our football team and I. No question about that -- to -- -- often though was a tough day for much of -- go and a learning experience but. As you look back on it and move forward towards Syracuse reminds him that hey we need to do things that I hope you winnable game. Absolutely you know as coaching you know it's never as bad as it seems and it's never as good as it seems to and you really I watched the film. And how much he did some good things but obviously. You know he's had a great week of preparation but you'll also see the package -- for some of our other quarterbacks and I think we have to do -- much better job of ball distribution. Of getting the football and hands of our different playmakers you'll see some different things out of -- -- We'll have a Jordan Alou will want package as well and so we're going into this this football game Syracuse. With only one option and that's to win a football. No question about that win number eight on the line of the bearcats again still have that opportunity to win the big east if they. And get a win on Saturday it's there -- -- -- will be at -- still much more common -- Thanksgiving edition coach and I dived into the mailbag when we were tough.
