Joining us now is the hall of fame coach. And get a chance to mention his age he's 71 year old Larry brown and a -- 71 as he goes back to the college ranks to coach SMU coach how aria. They banned from some good. I'm good thank you. Tom -- I'm looking at the resume here. It has been awhile since you've been back in the college ranks. What how how do you think the game is changed since you were there at Kansas winning a national championship. Well I -- come uncertainty here the last two days studying for compliance test so that's changed -- solemn. I think. You know put my staff together has changed you know a lot more. People work and for you in a lot lot different responsibilities. So that's changed and I think -- Recruiting obviously that's changed a lot there's one idea I was sent. College coach at Kansas my last stop. A win and talked to the guidance counselor the parents in the coach. And that was it now there's a lot that factors involved. You know what should she knew where you know kids are involved within a few coaches in -- you programs in. There's a lot of obstacles put. If you coach at a good school in a great conference. And you do the right things by the kids. I think it's all the same on the gotta sell your program in the the advantages to go on there and you -- you hoped it. Europe credibility newsdesk credibility. -- you an opportunity to be involved. Is it tougher to coach or not to coach. How close it was tough you know our and there and watch and other people coach even though I learned a lot. And -- had a great experience the last few years watching people that have been great to me coach can have great success suck. I lived in total Livan Villanova earned you know Jay Wright I must have seen them practice a hundred times in two years of giant killer Perry and try to meet Kentucky all the time. I was in Kansas all the time -- -- self in Maryland with -- Team with Mark Turgeon. I was at a number of places tonight. I think being around those guys and watching them interact with their players and their stats. Infineon that you know the contribution they make it into our game and how they're helping these kids -- -- that mediate pitch didn't want to get fact. And I know you said you dare -- Not for just a couple of years that your you know to -- let's take away my age I plan on being here for one. Now what is a wild to you because I mean I got to be there in looking at your resume. A wild could mean how long. You know I. I think things are different now they have -- You know -- obviously -- grown from pro to college and you know being a pro coach there's no guarantee going to be around the next weekend. Home. But I wanna be in this for the long haul I'm unaware that he -- some coaches might bring up my age when they're. Recruiting. Phone. -- automated commitment to. You know. SMU and we're gonna have a staff that's going to be pretty darn good. I wanna I wanna stay and see this thing. You know get off to grant thing going in the right direction as long as I feel like I'm contributing. -- a major difference come with kids. I wanna stay out of it and I really haven't thought about ever returning. Just gonna do some and then basketball league NF try. You know lost my job with it which Charlie. I knew I wanted to do something in. -- -- I've been really lucky you know my background you know how many guys I've played for a wonderful high school coach had played for. For frank McGuire Dean Smith John McClendon. Mr. -- Pete Newell Alex I don't. People like that and they shared so much with me and the assistants that I've had you know so many of them have gone on in the NBA here in college. They've contributed to me I -- give something back. You know I wanna -- Texas basketball and be available that you coaches in high school coaches. Before I go -- wanna give back all the knowledge and I was lucky enough to get -- and I think that way you can help the game and I can keep working. He says Larry Brown only a new head coach joining us The Dan Patrick -- do you know all your stops my heart. Do you know all the basketball -- she event. Sure. In order. I can and I can give it a shot but I don't wanna. Embarrass myself. Well liked and I can knows he's a David and. Well that that was my first cup a or Carolina powers assistant coach at North Carolina. So head coaching job Davidson first one. Carolina Cougars ABA right Nuggets media and well before -- they -- in Iraq at first and then rather try to continue Elena. Right 1980. The next great Kansas. -- Spurs. Write it well then you know then the grip. Ole miss the Clippers. Camara and under most knowledgeable guy and didn't you make the playoffs with a Clippers yes yeah. Dear yes I should've had that they're so yet 76ers. Pistons. Knicks Bobcats now -- immune. Our diamonds anybody that hit it at that are pretty good road America -- But I I look at the Bobcats now and I know they're young and I I feel terrible for Paul -- because he's a great man and doesn't deserve this but. I mean what's he going through here with this team that's gonna -- send up with the worst winning percentage in league history. Well I'm sick about it because. You know we make the playoffs first I've never made the player arson. But got rid of Raymond Felton without getting anything back. One of the greatest -- ever coached in my life. You covered it Tyson Chandler Rory played fifty games -- so trust the yield we made the playoffs and he'd. Come off terrible surgery and hadn't had a chance to practice and who's gonna have the first summer he was healthy and -- -- -- little work on his game. And now. He's just been new kids we've brought in more injured missed all the training camp most of the early part of this season and we get fired up just before Christmas. Does one thing media in fact. But I have four farm -- certain. You know all over there they're out there are not able to work -- You know -- the worse than when you're you're zero -- you. How tough was that when Jordan came in and said. The news. That this can believe it because. It's a lovely guy I think he's brilliant birdies around people that that don't have a clue. And they won't challenge -- the more you challenge and the more you get from him. Because he knows and sick about it and spoken to him since you know I don't like extreme what's going on. And you're right about Paul Silas. Though he's a crowd factor and coach. And they got some great young kids there you know DJ and Gerald Henderson -- Thomas has been struggling. I mean they got some good young players they get Anthony gave his son and -- to play within three -- certainly -- -- fifty. Here's my problem with with Jordan I don't see the same intensity and I know it's harder for an owner but I don't see that same intensity that I saw as a player I don't know if that's being fair to him. But even the people around in pain and you're right you've got to challenge him -- you gotta be almost have to make him fight back and I don't get that feeling in Charlotte. Well you know what I was able to visit with them and you know pick his brain. He knows but he has people around -- that just made me sick I mean it was it was not comfortable. On who's almost like they're loose it's little wonder what you're doing and getting back to him I guess I should respect more turned face to face with Michael. Because I do I do see -- passion that's I think he's just hurt right now you know we all make bad decisions you know when you. This drafting is not a perfect science. -- what I talked to him about players and you know strengths and weaknesses and what we need to do to be successful -- is right on point. But he has always -- the people that -- Get in the way and you can't you can't do it like that. I approach every GM and president have to be attached it to hit. And you might argue and inside and at the end of the day when you make a decision. You know you're all on board. And players can't go to new GM or -- the president alone. Got to go to chain of command. And I don't think they get. And look you know and I don't have blown smoke president. Popped NRC's San Antonio or work with me on Kevin O'Connor you to go work with me coached with me. You know Donnie Walsh I -- Donnie into this profession. You look at their reputations in the way they run things. Various visits chain of command there's -- loyalty with one another and the only thing they care about is doing the right thing and and I think that's that's gonna happen and sure I really believe that I think Michael's kind of figured out -- There I certainly hope so because -- We've all benefitted by being around him I know I have. Good luck at SMU always good to talk to and I keep teaching. It up. Look sort of -- reader can -- that you learn -- -- -- round in you head coach.
