-- unanimously selected as the American League Cy Young winner today becoming the first tiger when absence Willie Hernandez in 1984. And the first tiger starter since Denny McClain in 1969. Justin home in Virginia when he received the news today and that's -- joins us from now on the phone and not just that I'm not sure how much of a surprise this was but it has to be a dream come true. Absolutely -- dream come true you know obviously like you said that. Thank you surprised and again you never know. There's always that little bit in doubt. -- to to get the the news today it was still extremely exciting and yeah today in the road now myself but. Hopefully the city of Detroit the Detroit Tigers you know. Everybody that was involved in this my family. You know this this worker that everybody. You win and of course by completing a pitching Triple Crown the most wins strikeouts lowest ERA. What you look back yet why do you think it all came together for you this year the way it did. You know just my mentality has been able to us slow myself down and pitch and that's where like he's -- I feel like -- your previous. You know I started to. He's trained that way but still got away with -- my stuff mostly. This year just kind of clicked for me and it was slow down -- the contact during games and I feel like that enabled me not only to. I -- control the ball better but looking for a game well. Pars personal accomplishments go there is another went out there won't get that commitment but team wise up. A World Series titles this don't want to do list you went there and your rookie season came to win short of getting back there this year. You still a lot of baseball player by no means my -- your career is nearing its end but the closer you get to winning it. And the further you do get along in your career do you start to hear the clock ticking on -- World Series title. Yeah I mean obviously you won only one. Every season. But that's not gonna happen and and after my rookie season it kind of felt like. They know -- -- be here every year and then I quickly realized that that's not the case and realize how tough it is to get there and we knocked on the door this year. And down you know at the same core group of guys coming back so hopefully that leaves a bitter taste -- has now. Just like it did mine and I guarantee you that little bit extra drive this offseason and next year. To really work all the harder and and to see that the ultimate goal which is to win the World Series and and that's what we're all here together to do. Well it nonetheless it is a big day for you normally a big press conference would have been here help here probably to celebrate your Cy Young today but I think the hope is. They only have to make one flight to Detroit to celebrate both the cy young and the MVP when it's announced next Monday what would it mean -- all this off of the most valuable player award. Well obviously that's something that is just. You know amazing even think about. It's something that never crossed my mind going into the season. I think side on. Did cross my mind. You know that's something that I worked hard for him and that wanted to win. But has not been told me that out of energy into the Cy Young award and I have a chance when -- deep in the game season and you know Thomas or you're crazy times it hasn't happened for a pitcher along diamond and much less a starting pitcher. So. I just being a conversation. It is great. You know for one thing it means I -- to get here for another tiger's etiquette here. Because valuable implies that something good happened so the only part. A big part of the day another really good team means a lot. Just and it was indeed an incredible year congratulations out of its OK with you we're gonna plan on talking again next Monday but that's all right -- it. Justin thank you very much Justin Verlander. Your American League Cy Young winner.
