For instance it's.
This week on coach speak with Brian Billick presented by Samsung we'll discuss the importance of wide receivers running good routes. Plus Mike Singletary will break down the 49ers tough loss ingrained bad. All Lattimore and coach -- with Brian Billick presented by himself. Well.
Coach speak a relieved to show for today it wouldn't talk about wide receivers play how that disruptive defense that type wide receivers. That we have the National Football League we're gonna have a chance to visit with Mike Singletary. Mike Smith. We have unique chance to visit with defense of coordinator the Baltimore Ravens Greg -- First yes denies Jack Del Rio obviously Jacksonville Jaguars are great run Jack that's got a few good. -- feels great you know we've -- in tight ones but we've been able to close no well. Davis played well the end brings back last couple weeks and certainly -- click off three world. You you did a great job on third down -- three of eleven talk a little bit about how you approached the third down package would you start with when you're analyzing and offences. Off third down package and what would addition try to do.
Well we'd like to get a feel for what personal group things in life and what protections they like. Who their go to people are. In -- want to eliminate who they like to get to take away their comfort zone. And then try to attack the pressure. Tech quarterback with pressures that we can keep him from getting too comfortable. And you've got to an emerging young receiving star Michael sims walker -- talk little bit about the type receivers he has. He is really natural. Naturally gifted hands route running. Natural body leverage has decent speed. A blazer but he's got great body control. Ian like like suction cups for him in a little bit like Chris Carter but little more Jews and Chris but. That kind of competitor going after the ball. I've had the census foreigners a couple times I've been able either young new receiver Michael Crabtree and I got -- very impressed. With what he's been able to do a very short time have you had a chance look at my -- not not a lot yet so we're just getting started on that we've just put. Last week the rest but I have dole -- scouting I have seen a music of course we studied him come and I was well into. No big physical gifted receiver in it looks like he's been able to come in and a short time make an impact and that's hard to do it. You know we we know is loaded with talent then looks like all the injury issues that he had coming -- there are behind him so he's definitely somebody will have to account for.
You know you're in teaching position you're in a division with with an undefeated team and obviously the separation that that creates. And of course always you're looking at one game at a time that you really kind of in a new division now because you're competing in the wildcard division all these other teams that are. Third jockeying for I mean. How do you address that it definitely I know you always go -- a one game at a time but it's always about got to do well in the division well we're halfway through the season and that's not necessarily -- priority right now.
You know right now me with ten games down six to go and -- have a four game lead in our division there's there's no way to -- catch them. So yeah absolutely and and this isn't the first time I mean. You know we've I've been here seven years as head coach Jackson will -- in those seven years has played run and run and how I mean they've taken off their. Nine -- ten and oh this time a year and and they kind of have the rest of the and he kept playing catchup and so no different this this year you know we understand what it takes to stay the course right now. Brian what we've got to do is just put wins together you know just keep stacking wins together. In you know taking it one at a time is is kind of cliche but it's really what we have to -- Each one's a grind you know we've got to find a way to just you know keep clicking -- wins and and stay in the hunt and that's what we are right now we're in the.
Absolutely are doing that Jack are really appreciate -- good luck this week okay thank you runs. Now it's time for how I see it presented by Samsung you know -- mentioning upset last weekend with Kansas city of having the Pittsburgh Steelers. And the Oakland Raiders getting another win this time against a very hot very good Cincinnati Bengals team. And any time this happens people try to figure out what does that mean does that mean these teams are actually getting better and you'd like to think so obviously in the case about Oakland. Bringing in now Gradkowski at quarterback gave them a little bit light. Kansas City is a talented team and and practically play at home that can be a tough place to play. But I really think what it really comes down to a team like Cincinnati and Pittsburgh it's gotta be that proverbial wake up call they've got to look at how they were able to lose a game like that games they clearly should've won. And what that means that going forward does that really make them a bond a -- playoff team they may very well make the playoffs. But in Norfolk to be a bottom five playoff team and and become part of that elite team to -- that you could go to. And won a Super Bowl you've got to figure out how what was that your team was able to let down and let clearly inferior teams. Beecher -- time -- more psychological sometimes it's emotion. But those coaches clearly are gonna have to get a beat on how this could happen because clearly goes -- teams are not in the same league umpire about candidacy in Oakland as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals. I'm Brian Billick this is my hands on LED and that's how I see.
Still to come school's in session of Brian Billick highlights the receivers route tree in this week's Billick 101. That it what we coach speak presented by Samsung which there.
Welcome back we're talk with the head coach of the 49ers Mike Singletary Mike and all the losses are tough although I gotta tell I was very impressed with the fight your team. And this is the second time now a senior you're team play where they got down they fought back and offensively particularly. You were forced to spread it out and you saw the atlas is you have the talent to do that is. Is that something you have to look at again to decide if maybe that more fits the personality of the talent level of what you do.
I think. This one of those things that we're we're certainly looking at. Looking at how much do you expand. You know we we can't pull -- through worry everything that we worked on up to this point. But at the same time. You when you look at Alex Smith and what he's able to do and and how he -- From a group of players -- weapons around him. Certainly makes sense to look at and I think going for we we just have to continue to. Spread it out a bit but how much and we have to be very careful about how much weeks old Alex or offensive line.
You know like you go back a long time in terms of the player in the now as a coach and probably nothing has changed more in this game. Then the way that you are limited in the way you can play defensively against wide receivers. With the no contact -- five the ball. I can't think of another aspect of the game that had his dramatic change talk a little bit about that in terms of coaching the players out. With regards to the limited contact he can happen and how you jam a receiver coming off the ball but then how you have to deal with that after you know five yards you can't touch. Well the biggest.
is. Really have a news you -- players. Any go back to the coverage that you're talking about it if you got to play cover two wood and I think you guys who very committed. And very worried about getting up there and get and exactly and trying to get a jam on them. Because we know to have safety help over the top but when you are talking about -- one. Now you talk about something totally different -- guy. If if he -- so being here and there. Or people quick receiver. And he he knows that he might have. Help over the top. Then bowed out when you really get into. When a guy have to have a competent. Now you're talking about. Teaching U guys. To really learn more about the receiver that they're trying to get a jam on. And make sure that. He is something that -- really look at a lot of film and they know what is erupt again because they missed it. They're good chance that a Q you Koppen and maybe. Maybe now.
Mike I appreciate you stay healthy and have a good look -- all right thank you very much. Now we're gonna go to Billick -- one gonna talk about the route tree of receivers.
There are gonna talk about the route tree every since high school. Junior high college pro everybody has around. And is usually a number route -- Intelligent describes the route but there's a number so you can easily identify it. You may not used that number in the body of the play call -- and look forward to it these numbers in one form or fashion. Let's start with the will put everybody -- here the first round and let me give you don't review first spot number routes or usually to the outside. Even number of routes part of his thoughts let's start with the trade. The quick out for most people this is that five to seven yard rolled out he's usually the one -- The true -- being an inside route is now a quick three step slant that tends to be. What most people were for 22 quick slant quick out comes off three step passing game it's the one route and through rough. The three -- again an odd -- tends to be that role ten to twelve yard sideline route. And everybody runs. In terms of just being rolled square out that most people know from their high school -- Before now it is -- and -- dig route and this will Barrett. Some people -- dig route at twelve yards -- 1476. Team some might call them deep did I did a deep for Ralph. The five -- like. The three -- is an outside route that he now works awfully come back and it tends to be your deep comeback route. Usually starting eighteenth working back to sixteen yards to six route is Daniel -- tends to be a little. Where shall. Compared to the four route six route of the coral at the top of the route. It's the old curl -- well in high school you tend to sit and not run like before -- The seven Ralph is a corner route. And everybody run with the post moves were going right to the corner of the end zone do you pay out. Now with whatever but he refers to now ask the skinny post. The posted so there's a big eight. Which is a big post down the middle of the field. There's -- Didier or quick it. Which tends to be that Troy Aikman quick five step drop -- at the top. And then filing a class route used a nine route that's the vertical down the rail everybody goes political. So it's around.
True but he's familiar with everybody still uses it obviously with variations. But everybody has looked around for three years and years. We're fortunate be joined today by Ravens defense coordinator Greg -- and my coach appreciate you joining us couple things -- wanna talk here about particularly being in defense coordinator and and and you just came out of the game with the talent to pass attack as Indianapolis Colts and Peyton Manning. -- going into a game with a talented receiver like Hines Ward. Talk a little bit about having to adjust your coverages. From one passing attack to another obviously they have different ways they go about it from week to week. How do you readjust your secondary in terms of the different. -- of they're gonna face.
Well I think the first thing you have to do is you've got to decide which in your. Your group of coverages. Fit that team and like we did this last week against Peyton any such a great quarterback. We knew we couldn't sit in the same coverage you know he knew you had to try to. Given the same looks to go to a different coverage and and we did that most of the game I tried real hard to it. To almost relocate what I was gonna do call on the coverages to give him. The single look -- one time be quarter or quarter half the next time be too deep. The next time B a players own and just kind of lose to a warm. So that he couldn't going to be done that and and our secondary and shut down our secondary coach did a great job and mark carrier. Of of really work -- there -- secondary making sure they made it look the same so when we watched him practice we should knock. In this one that is definitely -- single high safety he can see that and that's what Peyton. Peyton has done such a great job. I think is because he hasn't had to learn any. New place you know me they -- on the same offense for years he can just spend all his time. Just watching his opponents and okay I'm no longer in this look this is what I'm gonna get. And not so we tried really hard to try to get to make sure that he could see that. You know now with the with the Steelers they give you the -- give them a little bit more of the bunch type routes you know they give you more of off the three guys together and bring in the underneath routes to drive well what's. You know. -- send them back -- and bring an underneath guy to make sure your cover all your bases and at the same time they have a little bit stronger running attack. You know -- you can't. You can't play a seven man box all the time or -- gonna hurt you run it so. You know it kind of makes you have to have both of them in your game plan.
Can you were talking about Hines Ward number -- big time there's no player that when I was coaching. Ticked me off more but there's no receiver are rather have than Hines Ward talk a little bit about from your perspective. The respect I'm sure you have for Hines Ward what he brings the game that you need. The musicality he brings to the game that position.
But what he plays the game of football like you would want every one of your players to play it in in right you're exactly right -- when you're watching him on tape. You have to be careful not to get caught up in him. Because you keep thinking hey if he gets near the power let's get somebody need to be really physical with him the way he's physical with your players. And then all of a sudden you're out of your location you're out of your your cup with a football insult. You know eat he just plays so physical that if if he's near a power Pete has a chance to really. Late hit on somebody he's gonna do it within the letter of the of all the law within the rules you know but sometimes maybe a little over it enough. In you have to save yourself well that's how you're supposed to play the game. And it would love big we'd love to get a shot on him but he's around the -- also -- just because that's how you play the game of football and not. He kind of brings that out and every one of our defense -- players.
Coach I really appreciated thanks so much really enjoyed -- we can do is -- some time by Bly thinks thank you very much of mass and I have high regard for Hines Ward. The with the other guys think about it.
When you go against Titans. When we had some of those battles there Baltimore you knew that it was going to be a physical game he's tenacious he attacks.
More like a linebacker playing wide receiver. Eagles after people coming -- Tennessee team does a lot of the dirty work in the office work. You know he's coming from a defender in the box coming back to back in practice. In in going to -- in the dirty work and says -- given the old rules for the wide receiver you only have five yards. -- behind -- it is like -- and because he did he's contacted to defend. All the we'll be. There's no receiver in the NFL -- ticks me off -- when I was coaching the Hines Ward. And there's no receiver I'd rather have my team at Heinz ward I have said many times you between Q Hines -- I'll be true in any game that you wanna play.
Yes the physical presence and coming in and out of breaks he has the uncanny ability. Body music you know users -- that we know that does that come out of breaks that's part of you know that's part of their jobs and jostling that goes on between. -- wide receivers I think I'm 41 of the best he's a little -- than people give him credit for as a guy known how to find it's awful how to. It's a soft spot in zone out of plane -- guy in in in in cinema for -- breakout. And create separation where he's not a real laser he's he's got the ability that you know.
Much more on the way including Falcons head coach Mike Schmidt on the importance of disrupting wideout at the line of scrimmage. That in more when coach frequent Brian Billick presented by -- continue.
Welcome back coach speak we're joined by Mike Smith head coach Atlanta Falcons Mike obviously yeah. A very physical tough game in the meadowlands but you had to feel good about particularly your way. Your offense battled back in those last three drive to me just chewing up clock and yardage long extended drives. That's something you can build --
Brian really with pleased with the way that he often played that we had four possessions in the second half we scored three touchdowns. In and kicked a field goal we had in nineteen plagiarized Bryan now. There in the third quarter so I thought that our quarterback Matt really did a nice job we've got into the no huddle and.
Yeah. A little bit about how. You know you've been in the league long enough now that that transition when the rules move so drastically limit the contact. That the DBs can have on the wide receivers. Talk about how that changed not only the technique to what you had to -- should DB but strategically. What kind of defense you can run.
Well -- I think that when they went to the no contact after five yards it definitely. Put it advantage to the often as you well know and you you'd have to do you work done and I think that's where the cover two teams started is. Be more prevalent. Is they wanted to make sure that if we were gonna reroute let's make sure that we've got some help over the top one outlined an up and play and cover for with the with the press technique. And out you know I think it really changes. You know it changes a lot because. You can't contact after five yards you've got to be able to mere man. And you and in play that technique if you can't do that Buford really have to play more plot I think you feel a lot more cover two teams. Now than you do in the path.
Trooper Mike appreciate it good luck this week now let's look at one of emails we've received. This week's mailbag comes from Stephen Hoboken, New Jersey he writes do you think your team can get by with a great possession receiver like Wes Welker. If they don't have a solid running -- Let's go to the coaches and see what they think.
I think you have Peyton mariner Kurt Warner camp and certainly with some skill people who have thrown to I think they throw it so well. That. Not only is an odd minutes sometimes replaces the running game -- and I think that. Again you're talking about. Couple quarterbacks have been around long time seen a lot certainly very accurate and I have some good skill people but in situations like that absolutely.
There's slot receivers that that those things have like Wes Welker it is you're gonna get the ball and in in his hands as quick as possible. And often times that matchup is very favorable because. He can be matched up on. A linebacker or linebacker -- strong safety type the majority of the time. In when the quarterback hits the ball out of his hands it really becomes a running play and it's such as they can gain as we all know. When you play when you -- those -- often.
I think so I think you always have to have some some type of running attack to good to keep your flock. Honest and keep your -- from being able to play a three man fought and and not. And let your your linebackers in your outside -- work in coverage more inept hopes to load up on coverage but. You know I I think what I what I noticed is the wide receivers are so talented in this league and are so big. That you can be covering guy appropriately. In -- either one gonna get out jobs for the football you're gonna get the you know first penalty.
Fourteen that really. They're gonna make they're gonna make their living on one of football and and not being very. Greg and run team. I think. It now it really comes down to the use of the clock because a lot of a lot of thought out there are people who run the ball we could really use the clock well. He got a guy like. Tom Brady were Peyton Manning that. You know they're looking at the clock and maybe they they rule a quick pass there but. They're not gonna snap that ball until time has come dwindles down that clock and now when you're doing that you get yours you get educate you needed to.
Give a question for me you're one of the coaches you can email us that coach speak at fox dot com. Or follow what's on Twitter a coach --
Let's take a minute now look at the fox talks rating again as we look at it it the differential between explosive offensive plays that you get and give up.
Plus the differential of the turn over different schools those takeaways you get those that you giveaway. And combining -- goes through together and you can see as we talked about from the outset things are -- beginning to come together in terms of -- elite teams still the possible and in Indianapolis obviously and that's one of the reasons that the top. You can see a team like San Diego and Green Bay with the wind that there are treated. Moving their way -- going in terms of the league well so as you can see this begins to clarify if playoff hunt the team's ability to create explosive plays yet minimized them the same with the turnovers getting turnover and not giving a lot of.
