And now it's.
we got those big -- Brian Billick present. Don't listen. Big game plus.
Deadline Sampson. Welcome to coach speak well obviously we're coming down the homestretch we've just come off too. Great AFC NFC championship games today were ram can't -- Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons talked about his view. On the matchup between New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings and has looked forward. For the New Orleans Saints Indianapolis Colts. Get a chance talk for Rex Ryan -- gut wrenching loss to those Indianapolis Colts his view. On the possibilities of what kind of game we'll have the Super Bowl we're also gonna visit with Mike Pereira about somebody you can call there were made this last week's. Championship game our first.
Guest is right off an emotional loss Rex I can't -- much I appreciate you joining us and I think tell tell us a little bit about we've both been -- locker room before what Q what do you say to a team after phenomenal year. Great game against a team that could likely go on and win the Super Bowl now what would you say to a team.
remain in your right we've both been there it's. You know. My I think what I citizen you know we have we really have a great team. It's just one our day I mean that we've got to look at unfortunately and and not -- of chemicals is that they earned it then and that team earned it you know Peyton Manning again. But it really look at it this way the second ring he's costly and I'd I'm mainly stayed -- you know that's right as well we lost in 06. We're gonna win a suitable way here. And you know we have the best defense we have our office was -- statement there. But he was -- their feet on the previous fifteen. Whatever nine -- so like that and then this this. You know game I felt the we can find a way to get through these guys are really felt good about our chances in the Super Bowl but I look at it like he passed me two rings and and I say him specifically. Because I don't know of anybody else maybe Tom Brady. They acted look at what you're doing try to figure out in the end. You know may be light years he likes a matchup and he can for Nadal his offense -- what he wants an immediate a great job I made every throw. Man he's just. You know I love the guy but I hate them.
You know you have to be encouraged though by the way your team under you know -- you've been on the road for two weeks. You come out the way you started that game you couldn't of imagine a better start to what your team that.
No I mean you're right we are -- in the field goals and we're able to knock you know were up seventeen to six. And I felt great about it but. I say that I won't we lost now strictly -- nickel back. The first thing they did is went to three -- on us and we it's a matchup issues and and it was. And no mistakes but it was like -- Tom worst credit. You know Jim -- credit. However much credit. They saw that as an opportunity and man did they run with it and it was it was from that point on his can hold hold your breath Lowber. Yeah and you and your writing giving them credit because that's what it is is messed sizing up the matchup that saw vulnerability there because anytime you lose a DB. Weather starter -- nickel guy that next guy that's and that's exactly what they went after an idea that to do. No question than I've ever with when you were always over there hope we got a new guy in there and bam here goes and it was just it was tough because when they when they Expos is it's really like going four wide. Because Dallas Clark the skillet Dallas Clark as a receiver. And it's just you know you're down another corner and -- just like oh boy you know. He got a little area there you know and and now I wanna bring up for the for the fans watching Rex just you know every talks about. How this is point 47 job there is no rest here your hours off the championship game here but you know plane -- mobile -- the Senior Bowl talk a little bit about that transition and how this job just doesn't -- to -- well. That's true. You know his -- reasons I'm going down there but that's I think -- You know the competitor -- you know who the in Ohio. I mean if I get beat man idea I did I mean I wanna get you back and -- boy Eddie I don't wanna get even wanna get an idea. And I I just always felt that that Senior Bowl might have been a time where a lot of guys do a little. You know rub elbows with guys that wasn't why and I love that I love football and one to go watch that that it's a great competition years in. You know lives in person. You know this guy competing in this guy in. And I always -- it's a great barometer of you know you're just give a great feel an initial feel for what's out there and college draft. Try to take a little time relax man you know Iowa are great season Rex we've talked to so okay thank you now Billick wanna I wanna we're gonna talk about.
The 46 defense Rex Ryan's dad buddy the protagonist of that. Famous defense will look at the basic components of.
Like the west coast offense will most overused term. Just identification of the team is being 46 defense or they're deep of course quarterback for the great their teams of the mid eighties. And Buddy Ryan coming up with the special what they called 46 defense -- course they're brain knows it was called 46 defense not because of alignment. Because his strong safety Doug -- Was number forty sex and -- could ever remember Doug points -- So they simply number 464 -- down the box candidates simplest form it was this there was an ingenious way of taking up space. Internet plus. Before bringing the -- down the box was as focused that is now they'll take the tackle. And they'll bring him back what's called a solid alignment and meet your insights -- garden center and guard all have big bodies over the top. That usually take linebacker now. Can't walk him right over the tight end. With another linebacker on the outside. And take their safeties and ten different walking down into what that was or -- as the eight man box. What's revolutionary at the time. Very difficult ones stopping front. Because you've outflank them on the outside Pat's great gap responsibility. In terms of playing and stopped inside and outside runs. That weakness stuff but at the time -- game it was really relies heavily on won't -- on the outside. Which people now we've all through your -- towards. It's showing you the 46 defense. And instead of being man bill bad draw people out his -- flop safety gear and don't even rotate his -- different. Two deep zone the variations I think Jeff Fisher is one of the best at this evolving the original 46 defense which he was a part of it. In Chicago -- Buddy Ryan and he can fall clearly into the phone -- War zone base coverages to go with what used to be -- pure -- run stopping.
Still to come find out which officials will be working the Super Bowl with coach speak -- Brian Billick presented by Sampson returns. In the -- mean. There's a place religions live. Forever.
February 14. Thoughts. Welcome back we're pleased we joined by the -- officials Mike Pereira my -- exciting time if you just like it is all the fans who in the playoffs. Talk a little bit about how the assignments for playoffs are done for officials how certain groups earned their right to have now the championship game and ultimately the Super Bowl.
You know -- referred it was the hybrid system mom I'm recruit guys I really kind of light -- aspect but receiving -- seven guys were together for all year. And then you advance them together in the playoffs because that you've been together for twenty games counting the pre season. You know your strength you know your weaknesses and work together as a team them and obviously despite it -- you know the team concept is important so. In the first two rounds of the the oh seasonal well part in the division. We stick pretty much with the nucleus of -- some guys aren't eligible first and second year officials we don't think are ready. To work in the post season so they're not eligible and then you have to make your standard by our standards. Just to appreciate in the in the playoffs and you don't that you get replaced but there's usually. Iverson's members of a group added the other for each wildcard division. Then when it gets stuck. Championships and Super Bowl. Now we go to the top three so we look at their overall performance and we come up our top three guys. And basically vols are the three guys that worked championship teams in the Super Bowl what's in more case the number one guy at each position we're in the Super Bowl.
You know the the New York -- saying it's Minnesota Vikings game fascinating game lot of components there. You around and take it piece bill once you take me through your critique a little bit. In terms of the world Lotta reviews the result -- in some people's mind a questionable call about on catch the ball. Want your take me through that that overtime sequence of how you think they'll win.
Well today I was nervous guy I mean this is this that was my. That I was sitting back in my jittery lacked some it. And I have that deal with so many things going on on only reason types of plays that I would never comfortable and a -- we got it. Overtime period you know it yet you yet about overtime or. Rule now it's it's. Actual replay assistant is in charge of all region used -- He's got the Clippers and it can stop it at any time in. At a point of cool place in knowing that its sudden death when you look at the progress why on the two in second place. I think he was right and shutting it down just to make your that we were right on the field and it was. A couple of plays that we always had a -- field stands because you're never happy opportunity. Or really not a clear enough shot to overturn the ruling that was made on the field. The pass interference call it clearly in my mind charitable I mean you know you. You'll look at pass interference when you -- something untouchable it's gotta be. Clearly untouchable it's got to land area where the receiver could have never gotten -- if he was never contacted at all by the end it was just. It was just one of those teams that when I look at the polls he's and I think when I look back our problem I'm gonna say it probably. One of the most difficult teams that will have at least from the officiating standpoint.
You know you know I kind of came into these positions the same time Mike can and I know this may. It's. I can only say this that all any of us can hope to do is to leafs whatever we've gotten into better than when we found it. And that's actually the case here you've done a phenomenal job on a very difficult job this game is better off because of view. And you don't always get the credit forwarded at the very at the very least at least they're not run out of town on rail so I just I couldn't have let this opportunity go by without thanking you for everything that you give the game over the last ten years.
Well thank you familiar very track I mean I I feel so honored to have been a part of his game Miami Matt. I might got a grew up in Stockton California into. Never dream. Sit in this chair AM and haven't their relationships that I've been able to have with people like yourself and in. And the other coaches and executives and in officials in this league. You know it's I look back at this is nightly -- and government degraded to go back home. I've been so honored to do. The one job in the world that I would really want and that's to have this job and appreciate -- and get to work with this magnificent game. And down there been times when it's been difficult but they're also been times where it's been. So incredibly. Award at rewarding and umpire feel like at least at the right arm there's more to do. We made some great accomplishment I think in there still more to be made. You know we can never be satisfied with where we are we have. More to do to become better and more consistent and I'm sure that the that my successor when -- name that he'll luck they'll take on the charge in. You'll probably forgot about me and about a week or so.
How -- you're good man Mike firm and invite to join me in boots and anytime we can dog 'cause the officials together. Built up that option that's right I'll bet you do a -- to do that so much Mike I appreciated it. --
Now it's time for how I see it presented by Samsung. You know was almost painful to watch the end of the game if -- Minnesota viking fan which I am have was there for seven years. Still vacationed there this summer. Nine know what going to and winning a Super Bowl means to the fans in Minnesota and watching the end of the game Minnesota clearly the better team. For the most part out plane than New Orleans Saints at the end of the game to the sequence of events too many guys in the huddle. Brett Favre. Brian untimely interception to end his last series the kickoff return a forty yard kickoff return in overtime. To set up the final winning drive. For the New Orleans Saints. It's a tough thing to live through the fans in Minnesota are such great fans. It's hard for them to buy in because they've had their hearts broken but more importantly Brett Favre let's keep in mind Brett Favre as a Hall of Fame quarterback guaranteed. He's a guy that's had. Flair about him. That has been a professional. Has brought great joy to the game yeah how we saw all the best and worst of Brett Favre. In the championship his final what I think will be his final game in this championship game. In that there were some unbelievable throws thrown and it -- only Brett Favre camp. And yes the final throw the interception classic Brett Favre in a way you should never do a ruling to the right throwing back across your body throwing back across defense that we -- touchdown after touchdown. But in this instance as it typically does. Led to a turnover that prevented him from kicking the field goal. It's hard to separate that disappointment from the legend of Brett Favre but let's keep in mind what a great player he was you take the good with the bad. Just like in a marriage and Brett Favre is going to be remembered as one of the great quarterbacks. To play this game. I'm Brian Billick this is my Samsung LED and that's how I --
When we come back Mike Smith was his expertise to tell us who was the edge in Super Bowl 44. That is more coach before Brian -- presented by Sampson.
Okay.
There's a place religions live.
February 14. Only thoughts. Joined by the head coach Blair falcons' Mike Smith Mike I know you were sitting watching those games just like I was let's let's talk a little bit about the let's start. With the AFC game. Peyton Manning once again his ability and and Rex through the house and I thought did a pretty good job. But it just Peyton Manning seems like with every series he got more -- or groove of what he was facing. There was no stopping him.
You have Brian you know I thought Rex. Early on Adam had a confused and of course you know how Peyton is watching these that you get you know. Get to look at it on the sidelines there he got he did get into a group. -- him you know just amazing the way that that he was so precise in his you know in his game yesterday.
Mike you gotta you gotta help me here now you and -- and I coupled dogs -- now. Your defense minded coach the last place rushing attack in the NFL the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl. How can this happen. Well Brian you know I don't really know how to how to explain I hope with an anomaly because. You know where all they Bryant got to be able run the football and stop the run. You know and in the -- here this thing that you know. It has the chance to win two Super Bowl than in four years and they're not seeing that run the ball very effectively throughout the year. I did think by the way that the get a better job run ball yet yesterday and they -- you know they get -- they -- a good job but I hope it's an anomaly because it's gonna blow. The philosophy that a lot lot of coaches in this league really believing strongly.
Dude can you can you go into a with a team. And even if you have that philosophy is this just Peyton Manning. Or do you think this could be this formula. Can be duplicate -- quarterback rich league right now you think there's anybody out there else besides a Peyton Manning that could orchestrate this kind of offense.
Well Bryant that. I I think that there probably are a couple of other guys -- you you know the quarterback in this league like -- that I think right now we're on the up trend. In terms of the quality of play the quarterback position. But I you know I really think that it's becoming that his his game is so precise in its become and speaking game you know they don't do a whole lot with promotions and -- Big stagnant. They're very precise in what they do and if they get a beat on what you're trying to do. He will cut you -- you know haven't faced him in the fifties now for all the years you know way. You pick your poison it's going to be a fat yet there's going to be a slow death week in and week out when you play those guys so hot I think that could be a --
You know let's go to the NFC side of it and and as you go went through the game you've got the sense at least I did. That Minnesota out top to bottom really was the better team. But it goes back to the old adage -- immune up -- turn the ball over five times when that championship game.
I've no doubt about Brian and you know just to go right back to the first game produced effect and I thought that was the game about explosive plays. In the -- you know how we we we've always had the discussions about explosive plays and how they can lead to victory. The the turnovers. You know you just can't overcome those and really even be that close. To take that thing make it into an overtime game with. Was that you know quite a -- what the fight Vikings rolled up 400 75 almost 500 yards but that. You know they turn it over and where they turn it over with just devastating those two. Turnovers as they're going to score -- guaranteed three point and they you know they turned over in fed and you are like whites.
Now and I hate to bring up what a source subject of but it was a big part of the game. Tell me a little bit about you're the coach on the sideline in the championship game you've got to timeout. You've got to position you already are in position to at least try a field -- draw on the 33 yard line. And you get twelve men on the field tell me what -- sidelines can be your sidelines going to be like.
If that happens all got Brian these. You know that that's unacceptable to have twelve to twelve men in the huddle especially after timeout and I think you know we. We have across the league have -- procedures in place most the time where the quarterback or. Or wide receiver is standing out of the bottle just to make sure that that that happened I know with and that. In the heat of the moment in the heat of the battle and it was an unfortunate situation that have that five yard penalty that basically like you said. Docked him out of knocked him out of field goal range you know just that tough -- play for a for for the Minnesota Vikings yesterday.
They appear burst off underlines as an example of just how solid organization Indianapolis Colts are all right the first time I've had an opportunity to watch in the for any length of time I would certainly impressed. By his pick out the you know we have the height weight and vegetables that you're looking for for big time favorite in this league in. He made them big time road. When -- now you know put the ball on the mark. With very very tight ever what -- I think in. Championship game record eleven catches for over 400 -- the art I think he's going to be arrive and start he's going to be forced to. Be reckoned with its next week for the for the thing they get their game plan.
And it's a combination of identifying that talent on the small college athlete. Find a place to integrate him into the offense and obviously a Peyton Manning during a phenomenal job along with developing an Austin Collie from Brigham Young University. To augment he Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark and as we saw in the championship game when you wanna take those two big receivers away. For game and I believe it was a record setting a playoff performance by pure Arsenal -- the stepped into the offense he combined -- size speed athletic schism. This is future star in the making another example of how good the Indianapolis Colts are as specifically Bill Polian is in identifying talent. I'm -- thanks. Okay Brian thanks but earlier this week Jay Glazer and I sat down we talked about some of the up and coming coaches that you may seat as future head coaches in this league. When we talk about. Good young corners because we're clearly in that that would like to stay on my chance and being. -- hired obviously but as you look at the coaching and gave you do you think right now.
Or on that upper Echelon we gobbled up a lot of last year with a number of hires -- top coordinators. Who those top guys right now -- leave him looking totally you know he didn't really have a like you said I think a lot of guys who gobbled up so -- guys who were. For dinner if you will. Going after that I think next you're -- a lot of big names who who's going to be on the street as well if you look at some of the younger guys. He and Sean McDermott with. The Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator. Even though this team wasn't good team this year I think pat chairman in office coordinator would -- friends I think he's on the right track. -- enough schemes and defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers so. You're you have your your good. Younger coach is obviously Leslie Frazier I tell you what. Leslie got weapons and use him when he do with Dallas Cowboys opens this weekend. Get a guy Jason Garrett was and everybody topless for Wallace certainly. Cooled off. Having Jason York great example of why you need to jump ex football with 32 of these jobs to Brian Schottenheimer would lumber I -- I'm with you here yet. And -- guy who -- talked to yesterday sure you don't -- his old job. He didn't even talk to them -- not no I've never been happier with Rex love being with wreck in happy in the league great plus. Coordinator -- pay and and torture of course they now they used to be like this. They are right there together the right in the same. And it's amazing how that thing back when I was making a quartet that last year at Minnesota. We were 51. Brooke the all time scoring record and 130000. About really 140000. That's -- yeah. And doubled off interleague game definitely for that yet they're like repair a community college that he -- me now now you -- you know Bradley was completed two years ago. Without Jackson with 251. Or something like that they can -- Jason Garrett earned. In Dallas now would now that come all the way back. Yet the owners of try to get it back under control and with and and at a fair and obviously with these inflated contracts. And I was about a pitcher them. The expectations the car and that's wide owners can say you know what does it happen. I've paid the mound I expect the amount Wuertz crime and we saw two quarters. But don't prior to the east I can government had during the season also -- Absolutely I think a lot of it and that we love so much right now which is the Internet which is why we're out here either so they -- information so. What have you ultimately lead to -- Used to be daily weekly out minute by minute and I think that. He could double to need so much content there are many opinions being thrown out their second by second and it's definitely. You know when somebody's not doing well it's absolutely deafening. You know how many times here during the season. That this guy who's gonna get fired this -- an option -- we heard it before convinced wade was getting fired during the season right people were convinced. That Norv Turner would be fired during the season absolutely convinced and now both got her life extensions it -- your right it's -- by mid level. Of course -- who benefits continues tomorrow with the college experiment let's see what they have in store.
Thank you for joining us this week on coach. Next week and our finale will look at Super Bowl 44 matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints.
