All right thanks -- Hi -- welcome back to Kansas City good to see again as always here doing some broadcast work for the yes network in -- New York Yankees always good to have you back home. First I think it's very interesting that you were -- sport standout -- high school. Never played baseball your basketball football stuck tells about how you went from the basketball court in football field to being a professional baseball player.
you know it was it was actually because -- high school than have a baseball team which is ironic to have one now -- and all the parochial schools and the intensity area -- baseball so I had planned summer league -- ban Johnson summer league game that was my experience there against college kids I was fifteen years old so. It's -- that was a blessing to play against older competition but. Football I really think you know that other sports -- help me in baseball I think. Traditionally I think a lot of kids now it gets stuck in -- sport twosome in Toledo football basketball wise to help in baseball aren't.
Seen it getting draft by the Royals eventually making -- to the Royals. Then traded to the New York Mets. After some time you end up backing Kansas City 93 in 94 after winning a world championship in Toronto. Let's talk a little bit about our 94 season here I know personally people ask me about the best team as -- I don't know ninth or with the best -- live -- as -- best chance. Of any team -- played -- the make the playoffs what do you think about the 94 seasons.
Yeah it was a it was a great. Team I mean we over achieved I think it's a team where -- at the whole entire 25 man roster contributed on that team and that's a lot of fun when -- around the teamwork. And when it comes to the ballpark if -- like to -- they're gonna be a part of it that they have a chance to contribute on nine and that night out basis so. -- my biggest regret. In my professional career is not being able to finish that nine to fourteen with the Royals to what we would have done here.
Yeah I really felt like we had everything going in the right direction great chance probably make -- not winning division at least as a wildcard for the and you move on. I have a chance to win four world championships in New York you won the Cy Young that year here in Kansas City all star teams perfect game in New York. Just tells little bit about the highlight of.
All those things that you did your career. Hey you know I think always there's always -- game first usury and your first big league -- her you know -- first of anything in the 96 World Series team with with the Yankees was a big one it was Joseph Torre's first trip our manager first trip to the World Series that year after all the hoosiers a great player He never meant the World Series and his brother frank. And actually made it to the World Series -- with the Milwaukee Braves back when they were still the -- so you know just that the satisfaction of beating the Braves in 1996 in the team. That was better than us we kind of stole one from them in 96 they beat us the first two games. In new York and we went down to Atlanta and won three straight came back to new York and won game six so we swept four games straight after losing the first two and one -- in new York and -- and I -- Yankee Stadium I'll never forget that that's clearly the highlight.
I hadn't been amazing and also the perfect game I mean I had a chance to watch a perfect game on television. We -- expecting anything at all at that stage of your career that happened like that.
Not really how I mean I think when something happens when you're older in your career you really appreciated that much more -- 36 years old I think the second oldest guy has to be able to throw a perfect game. Or no hitter for that matter so. I knew what was going on who has prize money that was my last chance to do something like that guess I got into the sixth and seventh inning. You know this this is that don't blow it it was like that good Angel on the bad end sort of -- an Angels sing you can do what you can do in the bad -- sent a ball don't blow itself. You know what incredible that perfect game wasn't as Yogi Berra day Yogi Berra was in the house that day. And there's a big number eight painted behind home plate because that was yogi -- number. After 88 pitches that don't Neifi talk about the baseball -- you know if you believe that stuff that was that was something that I'll always remember.
We just a great career very happy to have you back in Kansas City. And best luck with the Yankees thanks -- still --
