It was never going to be an easy road to walk for Ryan Couture. Son of a legend, progeny of a persona non grata, his path to success had plenty of obstacles before it. After an 0-2 stretch in the octagon, he’ll be forced to start back anew. Couture was released from the UFC early this week, FOX Sports has confirmed.

Like his father before him, the lightweight began his professional career later than most. He was nearly 28 when he made his debut, and got off to a strong start, performing well in Strikeforce with a 6-1 record before UFC owners Zuffa bought the promotion and absorbed it, acquiring his contract in the process.

In his first venture in the octagon, Couture lost an admittedly difficult debut against Ross Pearson, losing via TKO. Then in August, he took a unanimous decision loss to Al Iaquinta at UFC 164.

In addition to the expectations placed upon him, he was faced with an uncomfortable situation due to the ongoing rivalry between his father Randy and UFC president Dana White, which culminated in White saying Randy was banned from UFC shows and therefore could not corner Ryan.

After that proclamation, Ryan leaned more heavily on ground coach Neil Melanson and striking coach Tim Lane for corner advice, but there’s no denying that he could have benefited from the experience of his one of the sport’s all-time greats.

In a recent response to a fan about his release, Couture tweeted, “It’s all good. I didn’t perform so that’s what happens. I’ll land on my feet.”
