LOS ANGELES

Lyoto Machida is finally making a long-rumored move to middleweight. The former UFC light-heavyweight champion has agreed to change divisions, and accepted a Nov. 6 bout against Tim Kennedy at a Fight For The Troops show that will take place in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

UFC president Dana White announced the news on Wednesday night’s edition of FOX Sports Live.

Machida (19-4) has always been among the lightest fighters in the light-heavyweight division, routinely checking in at around 203 pounds. Still, he managed a very successful run, going 11-4 in the octagon and capturing the belt in May 2009.

He went 3-4 in his past seven bouts though, including his most recent loss, a unanimous decision at the hands of Phil Davis.

In Kennedy (16-4), he’ll face a grappling specialist who has won four of his past five matchups. In July, the former Strikeforce top contender made his UFC debut, earning a unanimous decision over Roger Gracie.

Kennedy, a former US Army Ranger, will no doubt be a major fan favorite at the event, which will take place at a military base and raise money to support veteran’s causes. It will be the third such event. Others were held in 2008 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and 2011 in Fort Hood, Texas.

The Machida-Kennedy pairing was the first announced for the event.
