No one in the Horizon League has been able to figure out a way to beat Wisconsin-Green Bay the last two seasons.
Detroit finally found a solution.
Shareta Brown scored 24 points and Senee Shearer added 23 as Detroit beat the ninth-ranked Phoenix 70-58 on Thursday night, snapping their 40-game Horizon League regular-season winning streak.
The Titans (13-11, 9-3 Horizon League) ended Green Bay's bid for a second straight perfect season in the Horizon.
''Detroit came in and they played a great game. We didn't put 40 minutes together and when it comes down to it that's what it's all about,'' Green Bay senior guard Hannah Quilling said. ''Any team can play their mind out and I think Detroit did that, and we didn't put together a game that we're happy with.''
Quilling said the loss doesn't diminish anything the Phoenix have accomplished and they're eager to prove it was just a minor setback.
''This doesn't define our season. This isn't the end of a great season,'' Quilling said. ''We've got a long way to go and this isn't the point of the season where we're really worried about (losing).''
Green Bay (20-1, 10-1) trailed for most of the game after falling behind by 14 early. The Phoenix took a brief 50-47 lead on an Adrian Ritchie 3-pointer with just over eight minutes left, but then scored two points over the next seven minutes.
Part of Green Bay's downfall was it reliance on the 3-pointer, according to coach Matt Bollant. The Phoenix made 12 3s but had to shoot 38 to get there. The Titans outscored Green Bay 30-8 in the paint and shot 35 free throw to Green Bay's 13.
''That's ridiculously too many. I'm so upset with that,'' Bollant said. ''That's probably the most frustrating thing right now. We've been after them to be more disciplined, get the ball inside, drive the basketball and get to the foul line, and we were asking them all game long.
''Part of it is their defense and how they played but we've been after them for the last three weeks to quit being a 3-point shooting basketball team and relying on that because as soon as you don't make them you get in trouble. That stat is just so ridiculous. It's really frustrating.''
After a slow start by both teams, Detroit used a 17-0 run to take an early 22-8 lead as the Phoenix struggled to score. Green Bay made just three of its first 18 shots.
Green Bay battled back to make it 29-24 at the half despite shooting just 7-of-31 (22.6 percent).
The Phoenix was without starting forward Sarah Eichler, who injured an ankle in practice earlier in the week. Green Bay also had four players foul out.
Julie Wojta led Green Bay with 16 points and nine rebounds. Quilling added 13 points, and Ritchie and Megan Lukan each had 11.
