10 things to know about Chaminade CB/RB Donovan Lee
SEP 17, 2013 3:35p ET
Whether it's on offense, defense or special teams, Croson says Lee should have the ball in his hands.
Lee's had the opportunity to play with his older brother, Devon, under coach Croson at Chaminade. Now he's playing with younger brother Dymond, who is a sophomore on the Eagles' varsity team.
They'll both be on the field when Chaminade (2-1) visits Oaks Christian (3-0) in the Ford CIF Southern Section Game of the Week on Thursday on FOX Sports West at 7 p.m.
Here are 10 things you may not know about him:
Late night snack
Lee is not much of a snacker, but when it comes to late-night snacks, he says the first thing that comes to mind is tater tots.
Lee is a native of Texas and has always been a fan of the Cowboys. He lived in Arlington until moving to California in the sixth grade.
"I still go back and watch games now," he said. "My aunt actually works for the Cowboys."
'Friday Night Lights' is Lee's favorite movie. The final scenes in the movie depicting the Permian High School football team still get to Lee.
"Whenever they fall short you can still tell all of the team camaraderie and everything," Lee said. "I just loved it."
Who'd play you in a movie?
"Definitely Will Smith," Lee said. "I'm just not that tall but I'm a good looking guy."
Normally when you see Lee on the field, he'll be wearing No. 21. Unless it was in last week's win over Valencia when he had to wear No. 11 after his No. 21 uniform was ripped. He wears that jersey number because of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders.
"He was just my favorite player growing up," Lee said. "Prime Time. I just loved everything about him. Like his attitude on the field and how he played."
One of Lee's greatest attributes is his speed. As a sophomore, he ran 11.2 in the 100m. If he could accomplish one thing in any sport, he says it would be to break Usain Bolt's world record time of 9.58 in the 100m.
"That'd be crazy to run that fast," Lee said. I don't think I ever will but that'd be crazy."
"Definitely heights," Lee said.
He's no stranger to riding roller coasters despite his fear of heights, but it comes with some hesitation.
"I force myself on it but I get mad at myself every time I'm up there," he said.
If you check Lee's iPod, you'll find some Drake, Chris Brown and Frank Ocean.
"I like to relax before games most of the time," he said.
Over 91 million viewers have watched Ariana Grande's "The Way" video on YouTube. The rising pop star also happens to be Lee's celebrity crush.
Lee and his younger brother, Dymond, usually pray together on the sideline before games. Everything before that, however, is very strategic on Lee's part.
"We do mental reps but (and) I sit in a certain spot next to the same people," he said. "I ride next to (right tackle) Ty (Moya) on the bus before every game."
What game do you get up for the most?
The meeting with Oaks Christian on Thursday is one of the games on Chaminade's schedule Lee has been looking forward to the most, in addition to their Mission League showdown with Serra later this season.
"I know a lot of people on both teams," Lee said. "We're all friends so there's a lot riding on this -- bragging rights and all that. You'll hear about it forever."
