Jack McBean's header in the 83rd minute gave the dominant Galaxy (1-0-1) the advantage, but rookie Carlos Alvarez, making his MLS debut, tapped home a low cross from Carlos Borja in the 89th minute to pull Chivas (1-1-1) even.
Chivas played the final 50 minutes down a man after defender Joaquin Velazquez was ejected for tripping over Galaxy winger Colin Clark. Chivas USA had lost midfield leader Oswaldo Minda to a hamstring strain after just 18 minutes.
The Galaxy twice hit the goal frame. Jose Villarreal headed off the crossbar in the 31st minute, after Omar Gonzalez headed Juninho's free kick into the goalmouth. Mike Magee headed off the left post from an A.J. DeLaGarza cross in the 50th minute, and Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy dived to parry Marcelo Sarvas on the rebound.
