Kaiser (Fontana, CA) senior running back Marquette Washington lateraled the ball to teammate Raymond Padilla to complete a 63-yard rushing touchdown and give the Cats the winning touchdown in a 28-21 victory over Rancho Verde in the Central Division California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Championship.
Washington ran for a tough 15 yards - breaking numerous tackles - before finding Padilla a few feet away just as he was falling to the ground.
The win gave Kaiser its third CIF title in the program’s history and the first since 2003. It was also the first for head coach Phil Zelaya.
“This was a total team effort,” Zelaya said. “This team is a bunch of guys with no names. We play for each other and we coach for each other and tonight we were coaching and playing for the city of Fontana.”
Washington finished the game with 33 carries for 269 yards and a touchdown.
