Brewers option Thornburg, recall McClendon

Thornburg had spent the last two weeks in the bullpen as a long reliever and as a spot starter if the Brewers needed one near the trade deadline. But after fellow prospect Mark Rogers pitched well on Sunday, the Brewers decided to give Thornburg a better chance to start on a more frequent basis, sending him to Nashville.
McClendon gives the Brewers eight relievers on the active roster in hopes that one player could reignite what has been one of the worst bullpens in baseball. The Brewers rank in the bottom three of bullpen ERA, batting average against, and blown saves.
In four games at the major league level this season, McClendon had a 6.75 ERA with a poor 2.125 WHIP. Thornburg, in two separate stints with the team, tallied a 5.79 ERA with a 1.714 WHIP.
Thornburg said after Sunday’s game that the team communicated to him that he would return in September when the team’s roster expands.
