NASCAR reschedules Bank of America 500 for Sunday due to Hurricane Matthew

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Officials pushed the Sprint Cup Bank of America 500 off until Sunday to set up a doubleheader at the Concord, NC track.

NASCAR officials have postponed Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and rescheduled it for Sunday. This come after the Xfinity Drive for the Cure 300 was also canceled yesterday.

The postponement of the Xfinity event was originally set for 11:00 a.m. and that has changed because the Sprint Cup race will now start at noon. The Drive for the Cure 300 now becomes the second half of a doubleheader that is sure to delight fans with a full day of racing. The green flag is expected to drop around 4:30 p.m.

For those who cannot make it out to the track, the Bank of America 500 will be televised by NBC while the Drive for the Cure 300 will be shown on NBC Sports Network.

Because the path of Hurricane Matthew had changed and it was nearly impossible to predict if the rain bands would clear out in time for the race, officials made the decision to move the traditional night race to Sunday in the daytime. This is the second year in a row where weather has forced the Bank of America 500 to be canceled. Additionally, it is the second week in a row that NASCAR has been forced to run two races on the same day.

Because the Sprint Cup event will lead off the day’s action, drivers will be faced with a green track and there is sure to be a competition caution around the 30 or 40 lap mark. With Xfinity following, they should be able to follow without that scheduled caution.

With activities wiped out Friday and Saturday, Sprint Cup drivers had just one practice session although they were able to get in qualifying. Xfinity drivers were able to get in two practices, however, their qualifying was washed out and the field was set by average practice speeds.
