Cream of the crop:
Max Scherzer, WAS (vs. MIL, @ NYM)
He's struck out at least 10 batters in four straight starts and gets two familiar opponents this week, the Brewers and Mets. Mad Max faced these same two teams in his last two outings. Here is that combined stat line: 13.1 IP, 20 Ks. Also, Scherzer has two outings against the Mets this season: 1.32 ERA and 20 punch outs in 13.2 innings of work.
Carlos Carrasco/Danny Salazar, CLE (vs. DET, vs. NYY)
At the beginning of the season, it was thought that Carrasco and teammate Corey Kluber would be the dominant one-two punch for Cleveland. However, Salazar has been the best pitcher in the rotation (10-3 with a 2.22 ERA). Salazar has struck out at least seven batters in four of the last five games and has allowed two earned runs or less in five of the past six starts. At home, Salazar is 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 42.2 innings of action. As for Carrasco, he's notched 21 total Ks in the past two starts and has only allowed one earned run in the process. In two games against the Tigers in 2016, Carrasco is 1-0 with nine strikeouts and zero earned runs in 11.2 innings.
Potential bargains:
Junior Guerra, MIL (@ WAS, vs. STL)
In his last two starts, Guerra has struck out at least seven batters. Guerra has also allowed two earned runs or less in three of the past four games.
Tim Lincecum, LAA (@ TB, @ BAL)
The Rays have the third-most strikeouts this season and will face the rebounding Lincecum in Week 14.
Jake Peavy, SF (vs. COL, vs. ARI)
Peavy has punched out at least seven batters in three of the past four games. He's also allowed two earned runs or less in three of the last four outings.
Avoid at all costs:
Ricky Nolasco, MIN (vs. OAK, @ TEX)
Am I the only one who plays the Nabisco theme song in my head when I read the name "Nolasco?" Ding! Speaking of "dingers," Nolasco had a rough outing in his last start: 5.2 IP, 7 ER, and 3 HR. After a decent month of April, Nolasco has a 2-6 record and has allowed 47 earned runs in 69 innings of work (12 starts). That's an average of 3.9 runs per performance.
Zach Eflin, PHI (vs. ATL, @ COL)
In his first four starts, Eflin had traveled to difficult ballparks (Toronto and Arizona). The road doesn't get much easier in Week 14. His Phillies fly to Colorado later in the week. No, thanks.
