ImpactThe veteran infielder took Kyle Finnegan, one of the Nats' potential closing options, deep in the sixth inning. Escobar is coming off a strong 2021 campaign split between Milwaukee and Arizona in which he slugged 28 homers and racked up 90 RBI over 146 games, and the switch hitter is expected to give the Mets a similar jolt of power from the bottom half of their batting order as the team's regular third baseman.

Taijuan Walker - Sharp in spring debutWalker allowed one hit over two scoreless innings without walking or striking out a batter in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals.

ImpactThe one hit Walker gave up came on a sun-aided popup that didn't leave the infield. The veteran right-hander came into camp behind the rest of the Mets starting pitchers after undergoing knee surgery in January, but he appeared healthy Saturday and Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that Walker believes there's still enough time left in the spring for him to build up to five innings for his first regular-season outing. While he'd likely be on an early pitch count, Walker may be able to slot into the fifth starter spot in the Opening Day rotation rather than having to skip a turn or two.

Lane Thomas - Goes yard SaturdayThomas went 2-for-2 with a walk and a two-run home run in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.

ImpactHis fourth-inning blast off David Peterson was Thomas' first homer of the spring. The 26-year-old had some surprising success with the Nationals last season after being picked up from the Cardinals in a trade for Jon Lester, posting an .853 OPS with seven homers and four steals in 45 games with Washington, and Thomas is penciled in as the Opening Day left fielder for the Nats.

Erick Fedde - Solid start to springFedde allowed one hit over 2.2 scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. He struck out two and walked two.

ImpactThe right-hander is expected to hold down a spot in a Nationals rotation that is a shadow of its former self, and so far this spring Fedde isn't doing anything to jeopardize that assignment. Through 4.2 innings over two outings, he has yet to give up a run, though his 3:3 K:BB isn't exactly dominant. Fedde's numbers in the big leagues are just as marginal, but he did post career bests in strikeout rate (21.7 percent) and walk rate (8.1 percent) last season, so the 29-year-old may be able to take another step forward in 2022.

ImpactNimmo has already gotten plenty of playing time this spring, logging 14 plate appearances across four games. Assuming he is able to return to the lineup Tuesday as expected, the issue should not affect his Opening Day status.

ImpactMarte recently appeared in a minor-league game and will now see Grapefruit League action for the first time with the Mets. The 33-year-old's recovery from the oblique injury appears to be going well, and he's on track to be available Opening Day, assuming he avoids any setbacks with his return to game action.
